I haven't been a big fan of CBS All Access until now. I enjoyed most of Discovery and Twilight Zone is fun but Picard is the first must-watch show on the platform. The future looks bright for the tales of the returning captain.

The story follows retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who's left Starfleet and lives on his family vineyard in France with his two Romulan companion Laris (Orla Brady) and Zhaban (Jamie McShane). After a contentious interview about why he left Starfleet for ideological reasons he meets a young woman named Dahj (Isa Briones). Dahj was happily spending time with her boyfriend when masked thugs break in and kill him. Suddenly she goes Jason Bourne on them and kills all three. This shocks her. But she has an image of Picard in her head so she goes to see him. The rest of the episode follows the two on a quest to figure out who she is and what her connection is to the former Starfleet captain.
The acting in this episode is excellent. We're used to Picard as the optimist who lived and died by the rules of Starfleet. Now he plays a bitter old man who's just "waiting to die". Still Stewart is pushing 80 and it shows. Most of his scenes are written so he's sitting down or stunt doubles step in for him to run except for one scene. But his lifetime of acting makes his performance unique and arresting. Briones does a good job as the idealistic woman seeking answers and finding more questions. Most of her scenes involve her asking questions and looking scared and confused but she holds her own with Stewart, which is no small feat.
The episode is excellent sets up a world of story opportunities. It's a world of Star Trek we've never seen before. Most of the story takes place on Earth which is unusual since most Star Trek stories take place on far away planets. It has an air of familiarity that draws you in instead of pushing you away or forcing you to suspend belief. That said I wish it traveled more into space. Even Deep Space 9 wasn't set on one planet much less Terra Firma. But it does ground the episode with it's familiar landscape so it works for now.
Hanelle Culpepper does a great job directing the show and creating a unique visual style for the series.
Picard is a great first step into the larger world of Star Trek and it's an amazing ride so far.
